The Barclays returns to Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, Aug. 2012, after a one-year stay at Liberty National Golf Club in 2009. The first event in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, The Barclays will again feature the top 125 players on the FedExCup points list following the PGA TOUR’s 37-event regular season.
The Barclays has hosted, for more than four decades, the PGA Tour's best, with names like Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh laying claim to the title of tournament champion in years past.
This tournament dates back to the early to mid 1960's when it first hosted the Thunderbird Classic and then later the Westchester Classic on the PGA Tour's schedule of events. It once boasted the biggest purse in tournament golf offering the biggest first prize - a whopping $50,000 going to winner Julius Boros in 1968.
The tournament was usually played during June of each year, either the week before (in even-numbered years) or the week after (in odd-numbered years) the U.S. Open. The Barclays had its greatest attendance in 2001 when Tiger Woods participated, although two days of heavy rains disrupted play quite a bit.
One of the more exciting Barclays finishes took place in 2005 when Pádraig Harrington eagled the par-5 18th hole with a 65-foot putt to win the title. The most frequent winner of the tournament is Vijay Singh (1993, 1995, 2006, 2008), with four championship trophies, while the list of others to have won more than once includes such greats as Jack Nicklaus (1967, 1972), Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1988), and Sergio Garcia (2001, 2004), along with The Barclays' only back-to-back winner, Ernie Els (1996-97).

Dustin Johnson won The 2011 Barclays title after shooting a six-under 65 to claim the weather-shortened opening event of the FedExCup playoffs with a 54-hole total of 19-under 194. 2010 Barclays Golf Tournament winner
The final leaderboard leaves Matt Kuchar as the winner of 2010 The Barclays Tournament. Martin Laird from Scotland was the top of the Barclays Tournament, but Matt Kuchar won in playoff with him on sunday. Both golfers scored 272, which brought them to the playoff. This is an amazing 12 under par – a great score at a tournament.
2009 Barclays Golf Tournament winner
In 2009, Heath Slocum holed a 20-foot par putt on the final hole to remain at 9-under-par, giving him a
one-stroke victory over Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Pádraig Harrington and Steve Stricker. The 2008 Barclays resulted in Vijay Singh winning this tournament for the fourth time, after beating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland on the second playoff hole. |
