Ryder Cup 2008
The Ryder Cup 2008 Golf Matches. Since 1927, the Ryder
Cup Matches have evolved from a friendly set of golf
matches into one of the worlds premier golf events.
Europe and the United States take
turns hosting this exclusive event. The Ryder Cup Golf
Matches are played at world's greatest golf courses. The
37th Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 16-21 at Valhalla Golf
Club in Louisville, Ky. Ryder Cup 2008 at Valhalla Golf
Club in Louisville, Ky., will be played from Sept.
19-21, 2008, the PGA of America has announced. The Ryder
Cup will serve as the largest international sports event
in Kentucky history.
In the early 1980's
Jack Nicklaus was commissioned to evaluate a 486-acre
plot of rolling land 20 miles east of downtown
Louisville.
Valhalla Golf Club has
a front nine that is links-style, while its back nine is
more traditional. The signature hole is #13, a 350-yard,
par 4, requiring a tee shot to a small landing area,
then an approach shot over water to an island green.
Valhalla's first nine holes embrace a Scottish-links
ambience. Wide, gently contoured fairways ribbon through
an open valley. Framing the fairways are multiple mounds
and lush collars of Kentucky bluegrass, which not only
add definition, but serve to keep the big hitters
honest.
Par at Valhalla is 72 and the course measuring 7,195
from the gold tees. Jack designed the slick bent grass
putting surfaces in typical modern style. They range
from medium to large size, averaging 6,500 square feet.
Invariably, however, they are well guarded by hazards,
including bunkers, water, scooped-out grassy hollows and
mounded swatches of lush bluegrass rough. Without fail,
these putting surfaces are undulating and often
partitioned into distinct areas making the "large"
greens play somewhat small. These green complexes place
a premium on creative shot making and on skilful
chipping and putting.

The 37th Ryder
Cup Tournament |
|
The Ryder Cup, which has been held since 1927 began
when a wealthy British businessman,
Samuel Ryder, offered to provide a gold cup to the
team (from the US or Great Britain)
who won his tournament. Since then, it has been
held every two years, with the exception
of during World War II and in 2001, after the 9/11
attacks.
The location alternates between the US and Great
Britain, starting with the US in 1927, at Worcester
Country Club, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

In England, the cup has been held at over 10
locations, including Southport & Ainsdale Golf
Club in Southport, England, and The Belfry,
in Sutton Coldfield, England. In the US, some
major locations include Champions Golf Course
in Houston, Texas, and The Ocean Course, in
Kiawah Island,
South Carolina. Recently, in 1997, the tournament
was held for the first time outside of Great
Britain and the US, when it was held at Valderrama
Golf Course, in Sotogrande, Spain.
Currently the tournament has three parts. One
part is the “Foursome,” where two man teams
use one ball each and alternate on hitting the
ball. Each team must also alternate on who drives
the ball each hole. Another setup is the “Fourball,”
where each man on the two man team has their
own ball, and the person with the lowest score
on each hole gets their score recorded. The
third setup is “Singles,” which is a normal
head-to-head match between two players.
The tournament is held over a three day period.
On Friday, Foursome and Fourball are played.
On Saturday, they are played again, but with
the order switched so that if Foursome was played
in the morning on Friday, it would be played
in the afternoon on Saturday. On Sunday, it
is Singles play all day.
Each team has 12 members, including their team
captain. Some famous team captains of the past
include Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, E.C. Brown,
Arnold Palmer, J. Jacobs, C. Whitcombe, Tony
Jacklin, and Ben Crenshaw. The captain chooses
who plays each day, and in which order. Some
famous players that have played in the cup include
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, David Toms, Philip
Price, Colin Montgomerie, David Duval, and Davis
Love III.
28 points are available during the contest,
and the team with more points wins the cup.
In order to take the cup from a team who won
it the previous year, the winning team must
have 14.5 points. If there is a 14-14 tie, the
team who had the cup keeps it until the next
Ryder Cup.

Betting on Golf
|
|
Betting on
golf is at its most exciting during one of the four
majors: The Masters, U.S. Open and PGA.
in the U.S., and the British Open. With the exception
of The Masters which is always played at Augusta, Georgia,
the venue for these events rotates among a group of leading
courses.
Golf betting
is available on PGA, LPGA and European
Tour events, The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British
Open, and the Ryder Cup, which in recent years has become
highly competitive with the outcome frequently coming down
to the results of the last few singles match-ups.
Betting on
golf has increased dramatically in popularity over recent
years. Two different types of bets are offered; the
first is betting on the winner of the event with odds,
generally ranging from about 7/1 to 70/1, being offered
on all players. These odds are then adjusted after
each round of play. Secondly, there are match-ups
in which two or more players are hypothetically matched
against each other, either on a round-by-round basis or
over the entire course of the tournament.
