Formerly the Nissan Open,
the now-named Northern Trust Open is set to tee off the
week of Feb. 11-17 at historic Riviera Country Club in
Pacific Palisades. This is always one of the most
competitive tournaments on the calendar, and golf's
finest will be on hand in 2008, looking to defeat last
years winner Charles Howell III.
The first Northern Trust Open takes place at Pacific
Palisades this February. The purse has been increased to
$6.2 million in commemoration of the changeover.
Incentive enough for the pro-ams to shoot it out for the
new title. Charles Howell III was the last Nissan Open
winner.
Tiger Woods owns victories in his last seven PGA Tour
starts, dating back to a British Open title in July, but
his pursuit for an eighth consecutive victory will take
an unexpected adjournment, as he will skip playing in
next week's Northern Trust Open.
The tournament will, however, feature 13 of the next 15
players in the World Ranking, including Phil Mickelson,
who hasn't played the Nissan since 2001.

Riviera Country Club, a classic design off Sunset
Boulevard, is a course Woods knows as well as any on
the PGA Tour. It's the closest one to his hometown,
and he first played here as a 16-year-old amateur in
1992. |
 |
Riviera is the only PGA Tour course Woods has played
at least four times as a pro without winning, and he
has only come close one year. That was in 1999, when
he finished two shots behind Ernie Els.
His record will show top-10 finishes the last two
years, but only because he closed with rounds of 64
and 65 after he was no longer a factor in the Nissan
Open.
